In
Recognition of William Zorn Honorary Member June
20, 2008 William Zorn has been a member of the Cleveland Chemical Association for 24 years. During his membership, he served on the Board of Directors, and for three years he served as chair for
the President’s Dance. Bill began his chemical
career as a Sales Representative with Eagle Picher Industries in 1966. In 1969,
Bill and a friend started a small chemical distributing company in Detroit
selling solvents, chemicals and dye stuffs. Business went well for them until
the shortages of 1973 and 1974 that affected the entire country. As a small business,
in a very large chemical distributing market, Bill set about finding an alternate career in the chemical industry. Eaton
Solvents (later Chemcentral-Detroit) soon hired Bill as Manager of the Dye Division.
After 3½ years, he moved to Cleveland as Sales
Manager for Ohio Solvents (later Chemcentral-Cleveland). About 4 years later,
Bill was asked to move to Toledo to become a General Manager
of Toledo Solvents (later Chemcentral-Toledo). Bill stayed in Toledo
for 5 years and then moved back to Cleveland as General Manager
of Chemcentral-Cleveland. Bill retired from Chemcentral after 27 years of service. Retirement lasted only days, when Bill signed on with
Vopak (now Univar) to become Product Manager for their solvents business. After
4 more years, Bill truly retired from the chemical distribution business. Bill and his wife Sandy
have been married for 44 years and currently live in Strongsville, Ohio. They have three grown children (two daughters
and a son) and four grandchildren (three boys and a girl). Bill and Sandy spend
much of their free time visiting their children and grandchildren in Toledo, California
and Texas. When
they are not traveling, they do a lot of volunteer work through their church in Strongsville. Bill enjoys playing golf and hopes to play more regularly this season. Some
of Bill’s fondest memories of the Cleveland Chemical Association are the early days, when almost every large chemical
company and paint manufacturer had a least one or two employees attending every monthly meeting. The
Cleveland Chemical Association is very pleased to recognize William Zorn as a valued and respected member. 1947
